Grades of Wire Rope

The primary wire rope grades are Plow steel, Improved Plow steel, and Extra Improved Plow Steel.

Plow  Steel  (PS)

Plow Steel is tough and strong, and the steel has a tensile strength of 1570 N/mm2

Improved Plow Steel (IPS)

The most commonly used rope is the IPS Improved plow steel. It is stronger, tougher, and more resistant to wear than plow steel. This steel has a tensile strength of 1770 N/mm2

Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS)

Extra Improved Plow Steel (EIPS) is used in the manufacturing of wire ropes for special installations, where maximum rope strength is required, and conditions of use permit some applications such as mine shaft hoisting, where increased tonnages on existing skips and drums can be tolerated, and where conditions such as sheave and drum diameters are favorable to its use. This steel has a tensile strength of 1960 N/mm2
